RUN TO THE GATE

Run to the gate
Cannot be late
Climb metal fence
Hedge cedars dense
Shortcut past Hydro towers
Hurdle through meadow flowers

Follow the creek
Where muskrats sneak
Watch black tadpoles
Swim in green shoals
Contemplate soggy sandwich
Deserted in boggy ditch

First bell’s ringing
Swallows winging
Snatch clouding gnats
Mushrooms tip hats
While lichens scale ashen bark
Graffiti grooves leave their mark

Race on asphalt
Monkey bar, vault
Take place in line
Seconds to nine
God save queen, prayer to Our Lord
Eyes front, I read the blackboard

Conform it says
Your sins confess
Daydream, I’m gone
Run off and on
Back to urban nature’s state
Home, where mom waits by the gate

I didn't think I'd have anything to write about that lovely old gate in the photo, but it stuck with me and memories of my childhood trek to school emerged.

Artists are magical helpers. Evoking symbols and motifs that connect us to our deeper selves, they can help us along the heroic journey of our own lives.
Joseph Campbell
Suddenly I was transported back in time to that rush to beat the second bell.:) Thanks for reading!

Thank you! This describes my school mornings until grade seven when queen blessing and lord praying was banned from public schools.:)

Yup. Each class had a (reproduction) portrait of either Queen Elizabeth or Queen Victoria. We were obliged to place our hand on our hearts and sing, God bless our gracious queen, god bless our noble queen...etc. Every year were were given a fresh pocket version of the new testament and no learning could commence until the Lord was thanked.

The pace and the rhyme is plucky and moves skippingly toward that old gate :D
Thanks for taking a look!

Kids often seem to me to be sped up, like mice and other small creatures with fast metabolisms.:)
