oooh...I like this one! I love how you shaded the hair! Very cool! And the eyes are so delicate and real looking...still working on that ^_^

Thank you! I used a coloured photo as a source for this one. I'm totally into the details of eyes and often draw them first and build the face around them.
:iconlonelysoldier42:
I did that once...didn't come out too well...I'm still familiarizing myself with those proportions, so most of my drawings start with the basic frames. I'm getting better...and eyeing facial proportions is getting easier, but for me, can never go wrong with basic shapes.

That is definitely one of several valid approaches. You probably like to draw in the shape of the face first and fill in the features. If this works, go for it!
:iconlonelysoldier42:
Oh yeah! I start with the circle then draw the jaw then go for the features...Don't use the cross as much as I used to...only with like 3/4 views because I tend to have a hard time with those.

Ah, thanks!

Artists have different approaches to drawing faces. I always begin with the eyes.:)

I used to begin with... maybe one eye, then maybe the outline of a face, then another eye, then redraw some things... But, then I realized that most of my pictures turned out crooked, and a good artist I found on here did their stuff with grids, so now I'm drawing a circle-with-a-corner for the head and then a cross-hair thing, and then the eyes. ^_^"

Grids are good for beginners, because at first it's easier to look at what is in each little square and draw what you see than figure out how to draw the whole thing. But... what you lose with full grid drawings is the flow of line and the expressiveness of pencil or paint strokes. Illustrators often use grids to save time and improve accuracy.

The cross hairs are great. I used curved ones, because the head is a spheroid (egg-shaped). The horizontal curve for the eye is shaped like a grin when the person is looking down, and the curve is shaped like a frown when the person is looking up. I plant the eyes on the curved line. The distance between the eyes will usually equal the length of one eye.

Next I draw in the nose, judging the length against other parts of the face. After that comes the mouth. If the subject is looking straight ahead, the corners of an expressionless mouth will line up with the pupils of the eyes. Only then do I start to shape out the outer contour of the face and the hair.

But as I said before. This is just my approach. It's best to find the one that suits you.
