OFFSITE SLIPSTREAM WRITING CHALLENGE:

A small speculative fiction group on yahoo called 3rdrocksfers is holding a short story challenge. Stories must be slipstream genre, 6,000 words or less and must use "bedroom slippers" as a catalyst or recurring prop.

Strange you say? Slipstream is a genre in-between realism and speculative fiction, which engenders a feeling of strangeness or cognitive dissonance in the reader. Bedroom slippers are most often worn at times when one is likely to have a slipstream experience -- waking up, sleepwalking or heading off to bed.

The deadline is Labour Day (Sept. 1st, 2008). No fan fiction, please! Submit your stories as deviations and send the link to me in a note. With your permission, I'll feature your story in my journal and/or on yahoo at 3rdrocksfers in the links section. Please check out the yahoo group at the link below and if you're over 16, feel free to join or lurk. 3rdrocksfers is a small bunch of nerds, who discuss all things SF.

ART FEATURE!!!

The artists I'm featuring have come a long way in an incredibly short time. Having spent years to acquire the limited skills I have, the work of these two artists just blows me away. Both of these artists had experience in a different medium and switched to fine art.

:iconmiskatonika: switched from shooting short horror films to traditional drawing and watercolouring. In my experience as an art instructor I have encountered few budding artists with her level of determination. She learned by seeking out artistic challenges and by accepting criticism with true grace. Her gallery charts her journey as an artist. Please have a look. Here are a few of my favourites:

*Miskatonika set herself the challenge of drawing pictures based on three words suggested by her DA friends. This picture was based on my three-word challenge, antlers, seashell, tea cup.

:iconjillianelf: switched from poetry to digital art... a mere six months ago. Looking at her digital paintings, you'd think she's been doing it for years. Her abstracts are sensual, detailed and beautiful. I met *Jillianelf recently through her encouragement of my nascent efforts at painting in GIMP. I can only hope to come as half far as she did six months time.:) Please visit her gallery. Here are a few of my favourites:

MUCHO THANKS

My goodness! Three features in one day! I'd like to express my appreciation to *Snapperz, *Miskatonika and =Docali for kindly featuring my art and writing. And thanks again to those who have featured me in the recent past: ~chugglepuff and =WineWriter. This lovely support is not in any way taken for granted.

Thank you *batousaijin and *ThornyEnglishRose for giving children's lit a boost with your Tots and Teens lit contest [link] and for selecting The Together Rings [link] as 2nd place winner of the fiction 12 and under category. I'm totally thrilled and honoured.

I was also quite humbled, because ^StJoan saw fit to feature The Jesus Action Figure [link] among the Daily Deviations for April 21st, upon the recommendation of the lovely and talented painter `laurart

After having received this honour, I'm on the lookout for a DD or two that I can recommend. (Not that I'm tight with any of the gallery heads...I'm still a relative noob here.) Anyway, if you think your art or writing is DD worthy please bring it to my attention.:) Also, I'll be holding forums in future to give away faves, possible subs or at the very least verbose comments and constructive criticism.

Most of my writing is aimed at adults and young adults, but every once in a while I get the urge to write a children's story or poem:

RAINY DAY

Jump right in a puddle;
Fill your boots full of muddle.

Let the raindrops wash your hair;
Grandma and Grandpa won’t care.

Leave your cake in the drizzle
And wait for it to fizzle.

Put rainbows in your pockets
And save ‘em for a rainy day,
Save ‘em for a rainy day.

Oh my!!! The last time I had a 'DD' was 8 years ago when I was pregnant with my youngest offspring! I could barely see my shoes. I'm now back to a modest B-sized bra and I'm quite humbled, because ^StJoan saw fit to feature The Jesus Action Figure [link] among the Daily Deviations for April 21st, upon the recommendation of the lovely and talented painter `laurart

Thank you to everyone who took the time to read my rather long short story.:) Being read means the world to a writer.

Having said this, you'll notice I have a writers' feature below... :D

I WRITE

Here's a small sample of my prose. It's from a novella I'm writing as a tribute to Flowers to Algernon. The main character is a girl with Down Syndrome who receives surgery to improve her ability to learn. The following scene occurs early in the story, which is called:

O' SUSANNAH

“You still there, Tom?” I shout at the phone.
“I got nothin’ left to say.”
How can he say this? I think about how me and Tom met in the garden at the Day Centre. Me and some of the other Specials were going to plant tulip bulbs. He was digging the holes. He had on a T-Shirt and I saw his strong arms. I put my bulb in upside-down and he fixed it and put the dirt on top. “You’re smart at growing things,” I told him. He said that’s how come he got the job in the garden. He pointed at the Centre with his shovel and said he used to go there too. The next morning, I got to the Centre early to see my tulip, but Tom said it wouldn’t grow until spring. I kept coming to the garden anyway, so he asked if I wanted to work. I raked leaves with Tom and in the winter I rode the snow blower with him. Then one day he pointed to my tulip. It had a big, yellow flower. He said it was almost as pretty as me and I let him kiss me. So how can Tom have nothing left to say?
“I love you!” I cry into the phone.
“You won’t love me no more when you’re smart.”
“No! I love you! Always! Come see me. Please! They’re taking me away. Please!
“Gotta go, Sunny.”
He hangs up and my eyes swim in tears.
Dr. Jo comes in. She has my backpack with the moose on it in her hand. I wipe my eyes and my nose on the sheets and try to act like nothing’s wrong.
"What’s the matter?” She asks anyway.
“Everything.”
“Broken heart?”
“Yeah.” I blubber.
She gives me a hug and pats my back. The ache in my heart doesn’t go away, but I stop crying. She hands me some tissues and a box of Smarties and says, “Chocolate never makes a girl cry.”
I snuffle and ask, “Your heart broke?”
She looks far away and says, “Yes. I got over it a long time ago.”
“How?”
“I threw myself into my work and ate lots of chocolate. Hey, may I have some of those Smarties?”

MY FORMER PROF, Canadian author, Robert J. Sawyer:

This weekend I'm going to an annual open house at the home of sci-fi writer Robert J. Sawyer. I got to know this truly nice guy and his poet wife Carolyn Clink a couple of years ago, after I took a creative SF writing course at UofT, which Robert Sawyer taught. FIGHTING CITY HALL
In my continuing battle with my employer over manditory uniform policy, my union rep is doing her best to find a compromise. While I will not wear a big, ugly green t-shirt with the city's logo on it, I will wear a nametag or a painting smock or apron which bears the city logo. If all goes well, I will get to keep my job and I may end up with a free tilley hat.
:D

Latest development:

The union rep took my issue to management and they have said that I must wear the uniform or I will be fired. The said I may put a smock, cardigan, labcoat or whatever on top of the uniform as long as a bit of ugly green is showing. How pointless is that?

I now have a choice to make. I can quit. I can wait to be fired. I can give the union rep permission to take the t-shirt issue forward in the next bargaining session, which will be over a year from now... The condition for this, so far, is that I wear the t-shirt as a show of good faith in the meantime. Wearing the t-shirt makes no sense to me, especially if the policy is going to be changed, which I think is likely. Art instructors at another large centre are in the process of being forced to wear the uniform.... which means it isn't just me who is unhappy about this.

What surprises me the most about this whole thing is that I thought it was the union that had pushed for the uniforms, but it was really the reverse. Management clearly wants this. They see uniforms as a way of promoting their reputation for 'safety'. People are supposed to see the green shirts and feel 'safe'. Trouble is, the uniforms actually come in grey and blue as well. Nothing management says or does makes sense to me. <shakes head>

FIGHTING CITY HALL

I am fighting, city hall, my employer over the dress code.

Some of the classes I teach are for The City of Toronto, Parks and Recreation Dept. They have a rule that all part-time staff must wear the 'uniform'. The uniform is a big, ugly, green t-shirt with the city's logo on it and the word 'staff' on the back. This is fine for teenagers who work at pools, skating rinks, gyms and daycares. But not for me.

I will wear a tasteful nametag, to identify me as a city of toronto instructor. But I will not wear the t-shirt. If management is closed minded and unintelligent about this, I will probably be fired.

I do not care. I will not wear the t-shirt.

It demeans me. I did not become an artist and art instructor to wear a 'uniform'. I have purposely avoided jobs that required uniforms my entire life. I will not wear one now. I dress in a professional (and attractive) manner when teaching. I like to present myself in a way that is ME. ME, an individualist, who is not represented by a big, ugly, green t-shirt, which will make me look and feel like an old frump.

I have asked my supervisor's supervisor to take this up the chain of command. I have been an instructor for the city for 15 years. I do not feel I am being a diva. I bring this experience and knowledge to the classroom. I'm not some high school kid the city can push around.

So, if they don't agree to let me wear a nametag instead of the ridiculous shirt. They will look very silly firing somebody who works to promote city art programs, who takes students regardless of disability and who has complied with every requirement (no matter how pointless) except this one.

All is not lost, though. I'd still have my position at the art centre/ gallery, which is run by a different city department and does not require staff to wear stupid t-shirts. I would also continue to teach the private classes I do for intellectually handicapped adults.

Actually I think this whole thing is pretty hilarious. Whatever happens, I'll have fodder for a short story or a tale to tell my kids and future grandkids.:D

***
Update:

A rolled up green t-shirt arrived at the school where I teach Family Sketching and Drawing... There were no supervisors to be seen. No confrontation. (Whew!) In fact the staff on duty laughed at the very idea of me actually wearing the t-shirt. They made a nametag for me and volunteered ideas on personalizing the t-shirt with a pair of scissors.:) These guys aren't the ones making the decisions, though. A confrontation with management may be in the offing.

Wow! I made a small, but legitimate complaint about ad placement and, voila, :iconchix0r: gave me a month's subscription! Thank you!I probably won't do much with it besides hiding those ads at the top of the gallery screen, but I must say I feel very special today.:)

I'm still in post-Christmas heaven! I hope you all are too. It's not quite over yet. There are visitors yet to come and gifts to exchange, but the worst is behind me and I can finally relax.:)

Especially as I look totally cool in this cool t-shirt I got from my brother featuring a happy face with a duct tape gag, which says, "Silence is Golden. Duct Tape is silver."

It also still feels good to have unburdened myself of "The Jesus Action Figure" [link] (a short story with the working title "Christmas From Hell"). Check out the other entries for :iconwinewriter:'s Worst of Christmas contest at [link]
